What is it about some of us – hankering after the one that got away? The one that didn’t, is never good enough, and often thoughtlessly slapped with the next best alternative label.

Because the one that got away is the one we would never know what could have happened. And because we would never know, it would possibly – likely, definitely always - be the best. The one with all the potential, the answer to all that we have ever wanted and needed. Or so we thought.

Perhaps this harks back to the mentality of our cavemen ancestors (evidence that we are likely to be all cavemen at hearts) where survival instincts were constantly in overdrive. Animals that got away meant no food, and the one that got away would be the fastest, the most beautiful, the best food for the day.

But because of this thinking, we are often oblivious to the one next to us, until they too, one day, become the ones that got away.
